History of the
Smyrna Opera House

1870

A historic gem built in 1870, The Smyrna Opera House serves as a cultural arts center dedicated to fostering the arts in central Delaware. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it boasts a rich history and unique architectural charm.

Over the past decade, under the stewardship of the non-profit Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association, the Opera House has flourished, celebrating the arts and uniting the community through a diverse range of cultural programs.

1948

Originally built to symbolize unity in the aftermath of the Civil War, this storied venue has hosted numerous significant events, from political speeches by luminaries such as Frederick Douglass and William Jennings Bryan to local high school graduations and cherished social gatherings. Over the decades, it evolved from a bustling theater to a movie house and back to a cultural hub, resiliently overcoming a devastating fire in 1948 and undergoing a significant restoration in 2003.

Rarely does the Opera House go dark, with its stage hosting a wide variety of music genres—jazz, classical, bluegrass, country, and singer-songwriters—alongside theater productions, art exhibitions, and more.

2023

Thanks to growing public interest, the Smyrna Opera House has expanded its offerings from just five events in its inaugural season to nearly thirty annual performances and activities. The venue also serves as a gathering space for community events, including weddings, business meetings, seminars, summer camps, and community arts classes.
